What does forehead feminization surgery involve?

This is a surgical procedure to modify the forehead area, sometimes in conjunction with changes to the hairline and nose. Softening the structure and volume of the forehead gives the patient a more feminine appearance and allows for a female-specific expression. The less prominent forehead and orbital lines make the facial features softer and the profile more subtle. 

The forehead feminization procedure is often combined with hairline repositioning and restoration. An incision on the scalp, which gives access to the entire area of forehead structures, also provides the opportunity to cut out a strip of skin with hair follicles. These are then extracted and transplanted into the forehead line to give it a more rounded shape.

The forehead feminization procedure can also be combined with nose surgery. The transition between the forehead and nose is crucial to the gender perception of the face. Differences in forehead structure in men and women

The skulls of genetic males tend to have more prominent and massive foreheads and brow arches. They are also characterized by greater volume in the lateral eye areas. In contrast, the typically female forehead is more rounded, with a smooth transition between the nose and forehead. If you look at the details, you will notice that prominent and slightly protruding brow bones are very rarely observed in women. 

It is by softening the heavily defined arches of the eyebrows and reducing the bony structures in the forehead in one treatment that you can achieve delicate facial features.

How is the forehead feminization procedure performed?

Forehead and frown line reconstruction is a procedure that may involve reshaping and surgically reconstructing the entire area of the frontal sinus wall. This is an air-filled space in the skull that is separated by a very thin (usually about 2 mm thick) piece of bone. And this means that a prominent frontal bone cannot be visually softened simply by shallowing its surface. This carries with it the potential risk of skull perforation and the difficulty of achieving a smooth transition between the nose and forehead. To avoid this, other surgical techniques must be used.

The best way to deeply remodel the forehead and remove excess bone is through an osteotomy, which is the excision of a bone plate. This bone fragment is then properly shaped into a new, ideal position. This is made possible by fixation with titanium micro screws, which properly stabilize the bone segment throughout the healing process. This method allows to achieve the assumed feminization effect in a safe and completely predictable way. Micro screws are not visible through the skin, so there is no concern about its unnatural positioning.

Using the described technique gives the forehead a more oval shape and reduces the prominent line between the nose and forehead. During the procedure, soft tissue is also lifted, which is an additional advantage. This is because it reinforces the feminine appearance and creates a younger look.

Recovery after forehead reshaping surgery

Surgical procedures in the forehead can be combined with other changes in the process of facial feminization. After the operation the patient remains in the clinic under the care of the staff at least until the next day. Further convalescence proceeds at home. Within a few weeks bruising and swelling will disappear. It is advisable to refrain from intense physical activity for at least 8 weeks. 

The effects will be visible in the first days after surgery. However, it should be remembered that the healing process is long and with each week the patient’s appearance will improve. Thanks to the minimally invasive incision in the scalp, the area after the surgery is invisible. After a few months it is almost completely covered with hair.
