When we look at another person’s face, we usually do not notice the individual elements that make up a unique appearance. We perceive the face as a whole, subconsciously classifying it as more masculine or feminine. And it is the small components that have a key impact on the gender of the face. One of them is the shape and structure of the mandible, which determines the visual perception of the lower part of the face.

The male mandible is usually more square, massive, and distinctly pointed. Men tend to have more bone volume than women, and their chin is more forward. Stereotypically, these features are seen as characteristic of a man’s genetic appearance.

What does mandibular feminization surgery involve?

The width of the jaw depends on differences in the structure and alignment of facial structures such as muscle, bone, skin, subcutaneous tissue, and fatty tissue. During feminization of the jaw and chin, we mitigate these typically masculine elements by reducing the dimensions (width and height) and volume of the mandible with various surgical techniques such as contouring and osteotomy. The goal of these procedures is to give them a softer, rounded and more feminine appearance.

Changes in the lower face play a dominant role in gender perception. Having certain facial features influences the formation of a woman’s gender identity and, consequently, appearance satisfaction, self-esteem, and confidence in social and professional life.

How does the jaw feminization procedure work?

FFS surgical modifications of the jawbone are designed to reduce its volume and soften the lines of the lower face. During a mandibular feminization procedure, the team of specialists at Timeless uses a special technique that allows the entire surface of the jaw to be treated through only three small incisions: two parallel inside the mouth and one near the lower lip with distance from the teeth and gums. This gives full access to the bone structures and tissues, while preventing large scars and protecting the nerves responsible for sensation in the jaw and lips. Moreover, it also speeds up recovery and allows for a quick return to normal functioning.

To gain access to deeper structures, specialists use endoscopic methods. This allows full control over the surgical procedure performed. Modifications in the jaw and chin area do not affect the functionality of the bite and the line of the teeth.

During mandibular feminization, osteotomy is used, which involves removal of excess bone segments. Recovery after mandibular feminization surgery

Just a few days after the procedure, patients can continue their recovery at home. The bruises usually heal within a few weeks and then it is possible to return to normal functioning. The only thing to remember is to avoid high-intensity exercise for at least 6 weeks.
